"It's demeaning and humiliating"- female detainees allege no privacy to shower at Don Dale
New allegations have surfaced that girls currently held in the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre feel unsafe showering and are unable to access enough basic sanitary items.
It's been a fortnight since FOI documents revealed the Territory government has been breaching its own independent monitoring policy at both the Don Dale and Alice Springs Youth Detention Centres.
The fresh claims suggest girls can be seen by boys and staff while showering because of a lack of privacy. Renovations have forced girls to use an alternative shower block without screens or curtains, according to the claims.
A spokesperson from the Department of Territory Families said recent visitor reports did not raise these concerns, and that shower curtains were recently damaged by detainees but were being replaced.
Kirsten Wilson, Chair of CAYJ - the Central Australia Youth Justice network - spoke to Alex Barwick about the new allegations. [Listen Below]
